Designing the next generation of the world’s most popular headphone

In 2013, Beats sold an astonishing four pairs of Solos every minute in the US, making the product one of the most popular headphones on the planet. To push the listening experience for the next generation to an even higher level, Ammunition partnered with Beats to redesign this beloved headphone from the inside out to create the Solo2.

In designing the Solo2, we focused on creating a lightweight, compact and comfortable headphone that combines incredible sound with beautiful style. Building off the sleek, streamlined aesthetic of the iconic flagship Beats Studio, the Solo2 has fast flowing curves, subtly refined surfaces, and incredible attention to detail. To create a truly comfortable on-ear headphone, we started at the center of the flexible headband and radically curved the frame of the headphone to respond to the shape of the head, and give the Solo2 a custom-fit feeling. The pivoting earcups have been ergonomically pre-angled to complete this natural fit, along with completely re-engineered cushions to maximize comfort and audio quality. The design also assists to dissipate heat and minimize sound leakage. Our exhaustive work in refining color and material finish gives the headphone a liquid “drenched” effect—emphasizing the Solo2 as a must-have accessory.
