“Crux95” Font by Brett Wickens Featured in FUSE 1-20

Launched by Neville Brody and Jon Wozencroft in 1991, FUSE is the experimental publication that took design and typography into radically new and unforeseen spaces. Now, to commemorate the release of its 20th issue, Taschen has published a complete retrospective of the interactive series that did so much to foster contemporary typeface design.

With its release, FUSE 1-20 revisits stunning work from the past two decades including Crux95, a font designed by Ammunition partner Brett Wickens. Each edition of FUSE brings together four designers commissioned to create an experimental typeface each and a poster based upon a central theme.

“I built Crux95 around the concept of a typeface in transit. A sequence of 1s and 0s, ons and offs, ups, downs and sideways. The shapes started to remind me of images fractured through stained-glass, infusing the font with a quasi-religious aspect. When communication is binary, it has no audience. The process of modulating/ demodulating communication gives it meaning, but can also lead to fascinating, nonsensical errors. Binary pictures corrupted in transit. Words scrambled into machine-induced code. This is the spirit of Crux95.”

Crux95 was originally featured in FUSE 14 “Cyberfuse” (1995).

The special edition box contains select work from FUSE 1-18 and two exciting new issues of FUSE 19 (produced but not published) and FUSE 20 (a brand new commission by the FUSE team).

It’s official! The panels for SXSW Interactive 2012 have been announced and Ammunition partner Matt Rolandson will be speaking.

The topic “Closer to One: Buddhism and the Internet of Things” is based on the ancient philosophy that all beings and objects are interconnected. Co-panelists include Sara Öhrvall, head of Bonnier R&D, and Vincent Horn, Buddhist Geek and meditation teacher.

SXSW Interactive will run from March 9th-13th in Austin, Texas. Read the full description of the panel here.

Ammunition Wins Two Red Dot Awards: Communication Design for Kohler Numi

Ammunition has been honored with two prestigious red dot awards: communication design for our work on Kohler Numi. The microsite, including video, and overall launch campaign were recognized in the categories of online communication and advertising.

Led by Ammunition Partner Brett Wickens and Kohler Executive Creative Director Tristan Butterfield, the creative approach for the campaign was inspired by Kohler’s rich history of bold and audacious print ads from the 1970s, updated for the 21st century. Furthermore, the positioning was developed to associate Kohler’s leadership position with gracious technology as illustrated through a cinematic-style storyline that unfolds between a glamorous, young couple – arguing, making up and being alone.

The red dot design award is the largest and most renowned design competition in the world, dating back to 1955. This year 6,468 entries were submitted for judging in the communication design discipline alone with just 608 works awarded. Winners will be on display in a special exhibition at the Alte Münze Berlin from October 7 to 16.
